What are GMOs?
GMOs (or “genetically modified organisms”) are organisms whose genetic material has been artificially manipulated in a laboratory through genetic engineering. This relatively new science creates unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacterial, and viral genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods.
The safety of GMOs for human consumption has not been assured, yet the food industry is allowed to produce GMO foods without any notification to the people. Several studies have affirmed that GMO crops have the potential to introduce new toxins and allergens into our food and environment. There are limited testing requirements regarding allergens and there aren’t any mandated human clinical trials for GMO crops.
As much as 60-70% of processed foods available in U.S. grocery stores likely contain some GMOs. If you eat something with high fructose corn syrup, there’s a 90% likelihood that you are consuming GMOs. Other countries such as Australia, Japan, and Brazil have mandatory labeling of GMO foods. Europe has completely banned GMO’s altogether.
Do you like being tricked or lied to?
I don’t think anyone is going to answer yes to this question. However, this is exactly what the food industry has done with the introduction of GMOs as part of the standard American diet.
The food industry is quite clever. As with every business, the food industry wants to increase profits. They have done so by creating a different genetic structure in an attempt to produce more food and without regard to how that food is effecting the human population. The worst of it all, they aren’t even required to tell you that you’re consuming a genetically modified organism and calling it food!
The genetically modified foods that have found their way into the standard American diet are damaging to our health. One of the most recognized example of this the production of corn. Corn was genetically manipulated with a particular strain of bacteria. The end result was a species of corn that could resist damage from insects by poisoning the insect. However, the damage related to this genetic manipulation also affects humans. In the case of corn, the genetically manipulated strain damages our red blood cells.
Cardiologist, Dr. Joel Kahn states, “There is a striking difference in the nutritional content of corn produced with GMO compared to corn produced without GMO.” He continues to explain that foods grown with GMO have half as much sulfur, potassium, and magnesium which are essential nutrients in controlling blood pressure, arterial health, and producing glutathione, the major cellular antioxidant counteracting the stress of using oxygen for energy production. It’s no wonder Americans are more tired and disease rates are higher than ever.
Testing of GMOs
There may not be a large amount of research on GMO foods and how these genetically engineered foods effect humans, but the research done with other mammals is a big cause for concern.
One of the first GMO feeding studies was published in the International Journal of Biological Studies in 2009 by European researchers. This study showed rats fed GMO food were 5 to 6 times more likely to have died by the 17th month of life. These researchers fed rats either food made with 11% GMO products or GMO-free food for 24 months. The study continues to report that of those rats who had been fed GMO feed, the females grew extremely large tumors in the reproductive organs, while males grew tumors in the liver. Kidney and liver abnormalities frequently occurred in both male and female rats fed the GMO food.
Brazil is one of the largest GMO crop producers. Dr. Joel Kahn looked in to a Brazilian study, published in March 2013, in which scientists ran tests on mice and the effects of consuming GMO foods. The study showed the effects of Bt, a microbial control agent used on plants with GMO that resist Bt. Among the mice fed the GMO-laced food, the scientists observed blood cell damage, with significant injury reports to red blood cells. This may contribute to anemia in animals and humans, although results were unclear. After these findings, the Brazilian researchers called for more studies on the effects of GMO altered foods in humans.
What can you do to avoid GMOs?
Just Label it is a national campaign to label genetically engineered foods. With Gary Hirshberg, founder of Just Label It, and The Organic Center’s help we have come up with some great tips to avoid GMOs:
